Upgrading That Old Currency Counter? Three Features You Really Need Now

Posted on

An automatic currency counter is necessary when you deal with large amounts of bills — not just large amounts of money, but large numbers of individual bills themselves. It can take much too long to count stacks of money by hand. The technology for currency counters, like other gadgets, has gotten better over the years. If you're replacing your old, trusty counter that you've had for decades, look for features on new counters that you might not have had on the old one.

Counterfeit Detection

This is a feature you might have had on your old machine, but if not, it's one you definitely need now. And good news: it's a common feature on most counters. The counters use a variety of sensors including UV, magnetic, infrared, and more to find bills that aren't real. Despite all the steps the U.S. government has taken to combat counterfeiting, crooks have continued to create bills that look very real. At a minimum, your new counter needs automatic counterfeit detection.

Denomination Recognition

When you look at counters now, you'll see they're digital with screens displaying the amount counted. One option you can get is denomination recognition. As the machine counts the bills and adds them up, a scanner identifies the amount of money each bill is worth and adds that to the total. This feature isn't available on all machines; many counters are still single-denomination counters. But having the ability to place a stack of bills in the machine and not have to sort them first into groups of currency amounts will save you time if all you need to know is the value of the stack of bills.

Bill Sorting

At the higher end, you'll find machines that not only recognize different currency amounts but that also sort the currency for you. If you're regularly trying to separate 5s, 10s, and 20s while smoothing out crinkled $1 bills, automatic sorting will free up so much time. You'll still have to smooth out the bills yourself, but you won't have to worry about separating stacks that are in decent condition. Again, this feature tends to be on machines that are on the more expensive side of the scale, but that extra cost could be worth it depending on what you have to count.

If you're going to keep your cash counting automatic, make it as convenient and time-saving as your budget will allow. Currency counters now offer a range of options to help you get your job done faster — take advantage of those.
