Three Things To Consider For Your Long-Distance Movers' Arrival

Posted on

Planning a long-distance move can be complicated, but your moving company may offer a range of services to help you get your items organized, moved and settled. Of course, there are some things you can do on your own to ensure your transition to your new home goes smoothly. Use this guide to plan appropriately for a stress-free move to a new city.

Label Your Boxes Meticulously

With a local move, you usually only need to label your boxes by room. For a long-distance move, however, the labeling system needs to be more meticulous. Movers sometimes transport items belonging to more than one person in the same truck, so you'll want to make sure that each of your boxes is labeled with your name and address. If your moving company has issued a customer number to you, be sure to place that number on each box as well.

Keep Your Delivery Window In Mind

Your moving company will give you an estimated date of deliver for your items, but there are many factors, which can delay the arrival of the moving truck. This is why the moving company will give you a window of dates your items may be expected to arrive. When you pack, you'll want to keep this window in mind. Pack a suitcase with enough clothes to last the length of the delivery window, and bring any other personal items you might need with you. This will ensure you have everything you need in your new home while you await your delivery. You may also want to consider investing in an air mattress and folding chairs you can use in the home while you wait on your items.

Make Arrangements For Truck Parking

Talk to your moving company about how large the moving truck will be. This will help you to make arrangements for parking the truck when it arrives. If you are moving to an apartment complex or a home with an HOA, you'll want to arrange with management to ensure the truck is parked according to the property rules. If parking the truck on a city street, inquire with your local government about any parking permits or other paperwork you might need to fill out to have the truck parked in a residential neighborhood.  Ask your moving company if it has a check sheet you can use to help plan your packing and moving project. Be sure to ask about any additional services, such as unpacking, which you can use to make your move a easier. With a bit of planning, you can have a smooth transition to your new home.
