Trucks Going Missing From Your Fleet? How To Protect Them And Your Company

Posted on

Commercial truck theft is actually more common than you might expect. The smaller the trucks or vans, the easier they are to break into and steal. That does not rule out semi trucks from being stolen if the thieves know how to drive a rig. If you own a fleet of trucks for your business, and one or two regularly go missing and never come back, you need some effective truck security. Here are a few solutions you can apply almost immediately.

Tracker Systems

Shipping companies that only own and operate semi trucks often utilize tracker systems. These are installed either under the dash or inside the engine, although there are also some devices that you can install under the tire wells. If your trucks go missing, the tracker systems can help you locate exactly where the missing trucks are and follow their movements. Then you can show the police where your vehicles are when you file a stolen property report.

Dash Cams

Dash cameras have advanced to the point where a thief might not notice he or she is being recorded until he/she has the vehicle several miles down the road. Dash cams can be activated remotely, or they can self-activate the minute the truck begins rolling away from your lot. You may also purchase dash cams that are constantly recording, but the recordings do not last long before the cameras have to erase a day or two in order to record the next day or two (on a feed loop).

CCTV on Your Lot

If you have not already installed CCTV security on your truck lot, you may want to do so now. The insurance company may be suspicious of you if several trucks go missing and you are not trying everything you can to prevent it. In addition to smoothing things out with the insurance company, the footage taken by these security systems can help you determine who is stealing your trucks and when they are usually attempting or successfully stealing them.

Security Officers

If you are having serious issues with truck theft and/or damage to your fleet, consider hiring security guards. You can either hire them to work for you directly or hire them through a security temp agency. There are pros and cons to either approach, but the most important thing is that your trucks will be well-looked after overnight and in the early morning before your drivers come into work.
